Did you just invest money into installing new hardwood floors in your Greenwood, IN home? Or maybe you just moved into a home in Carmel that already has wood flooring? Either way, if you’re new to hardwood floors, you may be wondering the best way to clean them and keep them looking nice. We at Integrated Flooring Solutions of Indianapolis want to pass along a few wood-floor cleaning tips for our friends in Greenwood, Carmel, Fishers, and the surrounding areas.
1. Determine the type of wood-floor finish you have.
Hardwood floor experts urge homeowners to learn that not all wood floors are the same. Some flooring is surface-sealed with urethane, polyurethane, or polyacrylic finishes. Others are untreated or shellacked. The finish on your wood floor determines how you clean it. If you aren’t sure, we recommend that you ask one of our team members to come into your home to help you determine the finish and formulate a cleaning plan.
2. Sweep or dust mop often.
No matter your floor’s finish, remove dirt, food, and other loose debris often. This step is important to extending the life of your hardwood floors. We recommend using a soft-bristle broom or a dust mop to clean off day-to-day things that track into your home.
3. Wipe up spills quickly.
Liquids are enemy number one for hardwood floors. You want to be sure to wipe up spills soon after they happen to avoid damage to your floors. However, avoid using abrasive cleaners such as ammonia to clean up spills.
4. Deep clean only when necessary.
Regular sweeping and mopping should keep your hardwood floors clean most of the year. However, once or twice a year (think spring cleaning or getting ready for the holidays), you may want to do a deep cleaning of your wood floors. Remember, your method for cleaning hardwood floors depends on the finish you have. Surface-sealed floors can be cleaned with specialized wood-floor cleaner and a damp (not soaking wet) mop. If your floor has a wax finish, you may need to strip the top coat of wax and re-apply a new coat for a nice, clean finish.
